CONGRESSMAN CARNEY VISITS THE DONALD HEITER COMMUNITY CENTER
Plans to submit $1.7 Million request for building project

Congressman Chris Carney meets with DHCC Board Members.
US Representative Chris Carney (D-Pa.-10) paid a visit to the Donald Heiter Community Center in Lewisburg during Friday morning's snow storm that closed area schools for the day. He left saying he would request an appropriation for $1.7 Million for a new building to house the Center's various activities and programs. Carney's visit was scheduled as he met briefly with a handful of Board Members including President Julie Reedy and Executive Director Andrea Tufo.

Accompanied by Chief of Staff April Metwalli and Regional Coordinator Susan Mathias, Carney learned of the breadth of services provided by the Heiter Center located at 100 N. 5th Street in Lewisburg. Tufo told Carney that the center served 4500 individuals last year through its various programs that reach out to individuals in a five county area and a population base well in excess of 30,000 people. She told the congressman that the popular after school program serves between 88 and 111 children ages 5 to 13 in addition to adult classes, summer day camp and annual programs such as "Yellow Dress".

Carney inquired about the Center's biggest needs and Tufo responded that it was definitely "the building which was less than five year away from needing major renovations."

In addition to meeting with Board members, Carney paused to talk to the half-dozen children who were playing games at the center while schools were closed. The Congressman praised the efforts of the center which serves the needs of such a broad area.

The Heiter Center's annual budget of $301,000 is funded in part through Federal grants, local government, private foundations and local business and individual support.
